WHO WE ARE

Initially I started this as a "hobby", then soon found that my services were in demand and were continuing to grow, namely through word of mouth. I found that my simple approach to structural alterations tailor made to suit the client kept things easy and efficient.

The founder, Ian, started his career as a site engineer, assisting contractors with setting out and constructing buildings, but soon found that he wanted to learn the science behind the design, thus taking a Degree and MSc in Structural Design and then formally being qualified as a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2002. He has a healthy experience of nearly all structural building types, but his passion for refurbishment and alteration works to residential and historic buildings is the real motivator.

When you employ structural engineering services you inevitably require the additional services of an Architect, particularly with regard Packages B and C (see Packages). This enables other aspects of the Building Regulations to be signed off too (ie, lighting, electricals, heating, insulation, fire, finishes, etc) which are all equally important to transfer a structure into a home. Sometimes planning permission is also required ahead of Building Regulation approvals, and this would also normally be undertaken by an Architect. However Rafter Engineering can also provide this service if required.

The structural engineering services priced for include;

a) initial site inspection and any necessary measurements to confirm structural design calculations for components (All packages)

b) Basic location plan to show location of components to be installed ( All packages)

c) Structural Design calculations for the relevant structural elements suitable for Building Regulation Part A approval (All packages)

d) Drawing plans and details ( Packages B and C only)

e) Structural Inspection and Report (for Structural Reports only)

Any further elements that may be required are charged on a component or area basis, depending on the form of works required.
